Wells and Bath

We were in Glastonbury a couple of days, and in addition to the fun we had in the town, we managed a couple of fun day trips.

Wells is a small Cathedral city so close to Glastonbury that you can see it from the Tor. The Cathedral facade is stunning, the scissors arches beautiful, and the medieval clock face impressive. Maybe the seniors playing croquet on the lawn of the Bishop’s Palace was just the crowning touch to that little trip.

We also drove through Cheddar Gorge (without buying any cheese) on our way to Bath. That was one of our “park and ride” days, and I’m sure glad it was. Bath is a bigger city than we expected. Another surprise we ran into there was a xylophone ensemble playing in front of the Abbey. Along with part of an organ recital in the Abbey they provided entertainment for me while Judy had her nails done.

And the visit to the Roman baths and museum made a lot of references in 19th-century BritLit are so much more sense! We weren’t ready to jump in and “take the waters,” but we did manage to dip a finger in the warm water that enticed so many to do so in the past.
